Born with a passion for birds...
Steven Saffier grew up in Northeast Philadelphia, and after "discovering" birds at age 10, decided on a career in ornithology. After years working as an Environmental Educator in California and throughout the Philadelphia area, he landed the dream job with the National Audubon Society Science Office in Ivyland, Pennsylvania in 2003.
Under the direction of Dr. Frank Gill, Steven developed content for the nationwide Audubon At Home program which was aimed at improving backyard habitats for resident and migratory birds through five main tenets that included the stalwart use of bird friendly native plants.
In 2005, he was the project lead on a book entitled, "Gardening for Life in Southeastern Pennsylvania." In that same year, he contributed to "The North American Birdwatcher" authored by Dr. Steve Kress.
In 2008, he switched to the state office of National Audubon in Pennsylvania where he developed the Bird Habitat Recognition Program and the Bird Town program, forging conservation partnerships along the way, providing dozens of presentations, and visiting hundreds of properties.
He left Audubon in 2018 and currently serves on the board of Bird Town PA. www.birdtownpa.org He is also affiliated with Wild Birds Unlimited in Buckingham, Bucks County.
When he's not birding or restoring his property with native plants, Steven enjoys classic cars, mountain biking, and martial arts.
